Oak Bay, Boucherie to play for AAA title

By Bob Carter

Two teams with a history of success in the BC’s will match up Saturday night for the AAA championship at the Langley Events Centre.

Third-seeded Mount Boucherie, which finished third the last two years, meets fourth seed Oak Bay, which has two titles and a runner-up finish in the past eight years.

Boucherie beat second seed Moscrop in four sets Friday and Oak Bay defeated top seed Dover Bay, also in four sets.

With a win Oak Bay coach Al Carmichael would pass Rod Belinski (KLO) for second place on the AAA victory list with five. Carmichael has won three times with the Barbers (2006, 2011, 2012) and once with Mount Douglas (1988).The all-time leader for coaching wins is Revelstoke’s John Campbell, who won seven straight starting in 1969.

Standing in the way is a Boucherie team led by three Team BC players — Jeremy Bednar and Brodie Kern (both 18U) and Bobby Blaskovits (16U).

Bears coach Joel Kern said the second set against Moscrop “was defining” for the match and his team. Boucherie couldn’t hold a 21-13 lead and had to survive long rallies and set points to prevail 30-28.

“We were able to weather the storm and pull out the victory with some timely kills,” Kern said.

Kern thinks the Bears match up well with Oak Bay, which has been led in several tournament games by 6-5 Nick Mickleberry. Both teams have size, blocking ability and strong attackers.
