LANGLEY- After yesterday’s play where Surrey Christian won pool C and Langley Fundamental finished 4th in Pool B- the first morning match between them was set to be close and exciting. The match did not disappoint. Early on, Surrey Christian came out with full confidence and took set 1, 25-21- taking advantage of a Fundy team that looked lethargic.
In game two and three, however, Fundamental just showed up and kept moving and distributing their offense more evenly and quicker- while Surrey struggled to keep up with the attack speed and in turn made more errors. Fundamental took the next two sets 25-17, 25-13. In set 4, Surrey showed some life and came out with energy and played some clean volleyball- this seemed to surprise Fundamental as they looked dazed and quiet. Surrey had a 22-14 lead, when they took their foot off the gas and made a couple of errors. This seemed to give Fundamental some energy and they started to claw back. In the end, however, Fundamental had to dig out of too big a hole and lost set 4: 25-22.
Surrey Captain, Comrie Engbers thoughts on the match at this point-
“In sets 2 and 3, we couldn’t put a ball away and Fundy dug everything. However, in set 4 we gathered together and raised our focus and our energy level and that was a big difference in the match.”
Set 5- Surrey jumps out to an early lead 5-1 after some great serving by setter Chris Boessenkool. At the switch Surrey leads 8-5. Surrey never looked back as they just kept the energy going and kept swinging well. The upset was complete as Surrey wins in the 5th set 15-10. Final thoughts by Surrey coach Sean Engbers,
“We played young for a couple of sets and sent into shell shock during that time. When our grade 12’s talked to our young guys at the start of the 4th set- they all calmed down and just played volleyball. We can head into the quarter-final tonight against MEI with nothing to lose.”
In other action- Prince Charles showed moments of glory as they produced some solid defense during their match with MEI in the 9 am game. In the end, however, PCSS could not handle the depth and attack that MEI kept generating. MEI wins 3-0. Surrey Christian will play MEI tonight at 6pm @ LEC.
