Gamache lifts MEI in opener

Top-ranked MEI and No. 3 Clarence Fulton opened their AA pool play Wednesday with a rematch of last year’s AA final, and neither team was in top
form. The defending champion Eagles won 25-20, 25-21, led by outside hitter Kaden Gamache.
“We passed very well, which gave our attackers lots of opportunities,” MEI coach Jordan Geransky said.

Gamache, a left-hander with power and accuracy, made the most of them.
“He has so much range,” Geransky said, “he can attack from anywhere on the floor.”
Fulton trailed by eight points in the opening set, but after a timeout, clawed back to within four.
“I told the boys if they keep giving them a free ball, they’ll punish us,” said Maroons coach Richard Bedard, whose team starting playing better.
The teams had several long rallies, but the Eagles won almost all.
Front row attacker Danny Aspenlieder had a strong hitting game for Fulton, which was the Okanagan’s top team this season.
“We’ll try to get positioned well and take it from there,” Bedard said.
Geransky said he’d like his team to get better blocking and offensive rhythm.
“We ran the offense a lot, but didn’t do a lot with the ball.”
