Langley – This year’s 2015 Big Kahuna BC Volleyball Championships could have some surprises in store if the regular season is an indication. Predicting the top placers could be difficult considering how teams have been shifting in the weekly rankings, playing tight matches and doing battle in tournaments.

After a 20-year stay in Kelowna, the boys BC’s will make their second run at the Langley Events Centre Dec. 2-5. A total of 36 teams again will participate – 20 in AAA and 16 in AA.

The AAA field looks a little more open than the AA’s. Traditional Okanagan powers Mount Boucherie and Kelowna, which placed third and second at last year’s championships, are ranked 1-2 in AAA, but all of the highly rated teams have had impressive moments and stumbles.

Two-time defending titlist Earl Marriott has a younger team and smaller numbers than in the recent past. The No. 8 Mariners have performed strongly in league play but less well in tournaments.

At least five ranked teams in AAA have shown marked improvement over last season: No. 3 Moscrop, 4 Dover Bay, 5 Penticton, 6 Van Tech and 9 Walnut Grove. None was a top-eight placer in Langley a year ago.

Defending AA champion MEI has been ranked No. 1 all fall, sharing the top spot with Clarence Fulton during one week in late September. The Eagles cruised in 2014 as they won every tournament they entered in the regular- and postseason. This year they again lead the Fraser Valley League but have been pushed harder by Langley Christian, Pacific Academy and Langley Fundamental.

Second-ranked Fulton of Vernon, last year’s runner-up, also has been competitive all season, the Maroons making an early statement when they won the UBC Tournament.

W.L. Seaton, which jumped from No. 10 to 6 in the rankings after a good showing in the TRU tourney, and George Elliot could be AA teams to watch.

The AA and AAA tournaments will run concurrently in adjacent gyms at the LEC. The complex is located at 7888 – 200 Street in Langley, a short drive from the 200 Street exit on Highway 1.

Big Kahuna BC High School Boys Volleyball Championships introduces New Scholarship

D7K_4711This year’s Big Kahuna BC High School Boys Volleyball Championships will introduce a new scholarship.

The BC High School Boys Volleyball Championships Alumni Scholarship is being established for two main reasons. One, to benefit current and future tournament players in their education, and two, to provide an opportunity for past participants to help those who follow, strengthening the unique fellowship of the volleyball community.

By making a donation to this scholarship, former players and coaches of the BC’s can also help make a youngster’s dream happen. For many students, the post-secondary experience is priceless.

Those interested in helping can make a donation by using this website, or by contacting Tournament Director Sharon Carter at mrssharonlcarter@gmail.com

Your support is greatly appreciated.
