SEMIFINALS SET FOR 2A BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
LANGLEY- BY GARY AHUJA
It is down to the final four in the 2A tier while eight teams remain in the hunt for the 3A title as teams are through two days at the 2019 BC Secondary School Volleyball Provincial Championships.
AA Boys
Four of the top five finishers in 2018 remain in the hunt following two days of action at Langley Events Centre as they get set for Friday’s semifinals, both of which begin at 3 p.m.
The four remaining teams are also this year’s top four seeds with the No. 1 Langley Christian up against the No. 4 George Elliot Coyotes in one semifinal and the No. 2 MEI Eagles versus the No. 3 Abbotsford Christian Knights in an all-Abbotsford battle.
The Knights won the title in 2018 over the Coyotes while the Lightning took bronze and MEI was fifth.
In Thursday’s quarter-final round, MEI was a 3-0 (25-22,25-16,25-21) winner over Surrey Christian while Abbotsford Christian also won 3-0 (27-25,25-21,25-19) over Pacific Christian.
Langley Christian defeated Pacific Academy 3-0 (25-20,25-18,25-19) and George Elliot needed four sets but prevailed 3-1 (25-19,18-25,25-23,25-14) over the College Heights Cougars.
AAA Boys
All eight top seeds advanced to the quarter-final round, which get underway on Friday morning (9 a.m. and 11 a.m.) before the victors compete later that night in the semifinals.
On the top half of the draw, the No. 1 seed and defending champion Earl Marriott Mariners will face the Riverside Rapids, the No. 8 seed while other quarter-final features No. 4 Oak Bay Barbers and the No. 7 Okanagan Mission Huskies.
The Mariners made quick work of the Fraser Heights FireHawks in an all-Surrey battle in the round of 16, winning 3-0 (25-15,25-12,25-20).
The Rapids dropped the first set against the Yale Lions before battling back to win 3-1 (20-25,25-11,25-17,25-20).
The Barbers won 3-1 (25-23,25-23,18-25,25-19) over the Seaquam Seahawks and now face Okanagan Mission after the Huskies won in straight sets 3-0 (25-19,25-13,25-21) over the Steveston-London Sharks.
The bottom half of the draw features the No. 3 Claremont Spartans and No. 6 Argyle Pipers in one quarter-final and the No. 2 Kelowna Owls and No. 5 Eric Hamber Griffins in the other.
The Spartans were straight sets winners over the Vancouver Island rival Reynolds Roadrunners 3-0 (25-15,25-19,25-18) while the Pipers were pushed to five sets before prevailing 3-2 (25-17,25-21,11-25,21-25,15-10) over the Mount Boucherie Bears.

Senior Boys AAA Volleyball Provincials – Day Two Recap
LANGLEY- By Mike Jamieson

Argyle showing their emotion after winning in the 5th set over Mount Boucherie 15-9.
Round One
Day two brought lots of volleyball to the Langley Events Centre, the ranking committee was the big winner on the day with no upsets. Round one opened up with Fraser Heights sneaking past Delta on the back of stud power hitter Daniel Lafluer. Only in grade 10 Daniel has proved he belongs at this level over the last two days. At the same time Steveston-London was able to get past Mount Baker to advance to the round of 16. Six foot six grade 12 standout Jalen Johal was dominant in the match.
In the next set of games for round one Semiahmoo took on Reynolds from Victoria. Andy Cheon was a force all game at the net for Semiahmoo but in the end Matthew King and the Reynold Roadrunners prevailed. Next up was Burnaby Central vs Penticton. Burnaby Central was looking to make a run to honour their former coach Bryan Dunse but Penticton grade 12 star Steve Searcy was too much for the Wildcats to handle, as Penticton pulled the upset and advanced to the round of 16.

BURNABY CENTRAL WILDCATS vs LAKERS
Round of 16
Earl Marriott was able to start the day off with their winning ways behind the powerful combination of Noah Halladay and Ben Francois. Fraser Heights put together a strong effort against the returning champions from Earl Marriott, but in the end the Mariners were on top form after a sluggish start on day one. Next up in the quarter finals for EMS are the Riverside Rapids, who advanced with a well earned victory over Yale. Riverside coach Rob Mackenzie praised the teamwork of this team and the play of Jesse Lee after the game.
Okanagan Mission was able to ride their six grade 10 players to a quarterfinal berth after a thrilling victory over Steveston-London. OKM setter Kael Murphy kept his troops organized all game long and was MVP of the match. Booking a date in the quarterfinals vs OKM was the Oak Bay Barbers who managed to hustle their way past the strong outside hitting of Seaquam. Kai Huguchi was dominant for Oak Bay in the match.
On the bottom side of the draw Claremont was able to get past their hometown rival Reynolds and advanced to play Argyle in the quarterfinals. Argyle advanced after a back and forth affair with the Mount Boucherie Bears. Rounding out the draw is the last quarterfinal between Kelowna and Eric Hamber. Eric Hamber advanced with a win over Fleetwood Park and Kelowna cruised past local rival Penticton.
Argle coach Shon Sim on his match against Mount Boucherie,
Argyle Coach: Shon Sim
“This was a worst possible match up, they have been top 6 all year and they are grade 12’s. We are a young team – our team is made up of a grade 10 starting setter, grade 9 and 10 starting middles, grade 10 libero and grade 12 outsides. – man I am super proud of that!”

Early Morning Action in AA- Surrey Christian Surprises!
LANGLEY- After yesterday’s play where Surrey Christian won pool C and Langley Fundamental finished 4th in Pool B- the first morning match between them was set to be close and exciting. The match did not disappoint. Early on, Surrey Christian came out with full confidence and took set 1, 25-21- taking advantage of a Fundy team that looked lethargic.

Langley Fundamental’s captain Emmanuel Tran working against the aggressive Surrey Christian Block.
In game two and three, however, Fundamental just showed up and kept moving and distributing their offense more evenly and quicker- while Surrey struggled to keep up with the attack speed and in turn made more errors. Fundamental took the next two sets 25-17, 25-13. In set 4, Surrey showed some life and came out with energy and played some clean volleyball- this seemed to surprise Fundamental as they looked dazed and quiet. Surrey had a 22-14 lead, when they took their foot off the gas and made a couple of errors. This seemed to give Fundamental some energy and they started to claw back. In the end, however, Fundamental had to dig out of too big a hole and lost set 4: 25-22.
Surrey Captain, Comrie Engbers thoughts on the match at this point-
“In sets 2 and 3, we couldn’t put a ball away and Fundy dug everything. However, in set 4 we gathered together and raised our focus and our energy level and that was a big difference in the match.”

Surrey Christian coach Sean Engbers discussing options with his team.
Set 5- Surrey jumps out to an early lead 5-1 after some great serving by setter Chris Boessenkool. At the switch Surrey leads 8-5. Surrey never looked back as they just kept the energy going and kept swinging well. The upset was complete as Surrey wins in the 5th set 15-10. Final thoughts by Surrey coach Sean Engbers,
“We played young for a couple of sets and sent into shell shock during that time. When our grade 12’s talked to our young guys at the start of the 4th set- they all calmed down and just played volleyball. We can head into the quarter-final tonight against MEI with nothing to lose.”

Surrey Christian wins over Langley Fundamental in the 5th set 15-10 in exciting play during the opening round of the play-offs of the AA Championships.
In other action- Prince Charles showed moments of glory as they produced some solid defense during their match with MEI in the 9 am game. In the end, however, PCSS could not handle the depth and attack that MEI kept generating. MEI wins 3-0. Surrey Christian will play MEI tonight at 6pm @ LEC.

AA Day 1 – MEI starts off strong.
LANGLEY- Dean Weiss
After Day 1 of the AA Boys Provincial Championships, there has been a bit of a readjustment with the top teams. MEI and George Elliott have finished 1, 2. MEI played consist volleyball throughout the day and battled tough for each point. MEI finished 3-0 defeating George Elliott, Abbotsford Christian, and Langley Christian. MEI’s head coach Rocky Olfert seemed pretty relaxed after finishing first and undefeated in pool play and said,
“It was a good start to the tournament and we have some things to build upon for tomorrow.”
MEI’s top power Tyson Ardell seemed to echo those comments after finishing on top. Ardell said,
“We showed a lot of character today. We showed up and didn’t let our nerves get to us.”

Finishing a solid second in the top AA pool today, was last year’s finalists, George Elliott. GESS, Head coach Chris Frehlick spoke very highly of his team’s play despite the slow start in the morning against MEI. Frelick said,
“We came out flat this morning against MEI but any time you come in as the fourth seed and finish second- you have to feel pretty satisfied with the day. Our role players really came together and played well in the final two matches today.”
Grade 12, Roan McCarthy of GESS about his team’s over-all play today,
“We played well and came together and played well with energy. The guys who were here last year knew what to do and knew what to expect. Our not really getting too high or too low really helped us today.”
