Richmond Christian survived a long, narrow first set on Thursday morning and swept past Princess Margaret to gain

the AA quarterfinals at the Kahunaverse Sports BC Volleyball Championships.

The scores were 31-29, 25-16, 25-22.

“We hung there in the first set,” coach Angela Wilson said. “We managed to regroup, and the team was supporting each other.”

The Eagles fell behind 9-1 in the second set but rebounded strongly.
Communication was a key to the victory, Wilson said. “We did a lot of talking on the court. When we do that, we definitely see more success.”

Richmond Christian coach excited!

Wilson pointed to the play of three players in particular:

– left side Elijah Kim, a versatile performer who “can fill any role on the front row” and also can play as a setter.
– 6-5 right side Jackson Campbell. “He hits well and he’s loud, a big presence. He had some big blocks and kills.”
– Grade 11 left side Jacob Louie. “He was very consistent and usually is.”
RCS advanced to play George Elliot later in the day.
Also in AA early Thursday, Elliot beat Windermere 3-0, College Heights defeated Pacific Christian 3-0 and Surrey Christian stopped Revelstoke 3-0.

ARGYLE WINS IN 4: The Pipers of North Van recovered from a tough 0-3 day on Wednesday by beating Fleetwood Park in four sets.
Coach Shon Sim played his top six players in a 25-10 first-set victory, then started to use his bench.
“The majority of guys who didn’t play yesterday got in today,” Sim said.
Serving was a big strength for the Pipers, who missed only two serves in the match.
Setter Brendan McCaffrey, a Grade 12, was again a big contributor.
“I think he’s one of the best setters in his age group,” Sim said. “He was connecting well with Ethan Gill, our middle.”

The Pipers advanced to an afternoon game against Delta, one of the few AAA teams Sim hadn’t seen this season.

Argyle placed eighth at the BCs last year, led by standout Marcus Bratsberg.
“We don’t have that type of player this year,” Sim said, “but we have more of an all-around team. This year we distribute the ball better.”
